Here is a rolling feed of road traffic accident updates from in and around Cardiff in 2022 / 2023.
As part of our ongoing campaign to offer road safety advice and help support anyone who has been involved in a road traffic accident, we have launched an initiative called #StayRoadSafe.
We hope that these monthly road traffic updates on our local roads will help to raise awareness of dangerous driving and how to stay road safe.

20th April – Cardiff pedestrian finally dies after tragic collision
A 74-year-old man from Cardiff who was struck by a Grey Ford Fiesta car in the Maelfa area of the city in January this year, has sadly died of his injuries this week. The accident happened on Llanedeyrn Drive on January 6th and Philip Jones, from Rumney in Cardiff, was taken to University Hospital of Wales in the city, and has remained there ever since. Following his passing, his family issued the following statement: “Philip Jones, 74 years old, died on the 11th of April in the UHW Neurology Department, after 3.5 months battling a traumatic brain injury. Philip leaves behind his two daughters, two grandchildren, son-in-law and ex-wife who he remained friends with, no words can express how heartbroken we all are. Phil was a larger-than-life character and well known in his community for his sense of humour, love of a chat but ultimately, his willingness to help anyone with anything they needed. We would like to thank all the staff at UHW for their exceptional care of Philip.” South Wales police are continuing investigations into the accident and are still appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist.
18th April – Fatal Newport crash kills teenager

A 19-year-old teenager and his 17-year-old friend were rushed to Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales today after a fatal crash in Newport. The 17-year-old is still receiving treatment but his 19-year-old friend has tragically died. The accident happened on Magor Road in Newport, a few miles outside Cardiff, in the early hours of Saturday morning. A police spokesperson said in a statement: “We’re appealing for witnesses after a report of a road traffic collision in Magor Road, Newport around 3am on Saturday 15 April. The collision involved one car: a blue Vauxhall Corsa. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Newport, was taken University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff where he later sadly died. His next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers. A 17-year-old boy, who was a passenger, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries. We’re appealing for anyone with information, including CCTV, or motorists with dashcam, to contact us.”
6th April – Four vehicle accident causes early morning traffic chaos

A four vehicle accident closed one lane of the busy M4 motorway just outside Cardiff on Thursday morning. The accident happened just before 8.00am and congestion led to thirty-minute delays for commuters on the westbound carriageway of the motorway at the junction 29 turn-off onto the A48 into Cardiff. By 9.30am the lane had been re-opened and all congestion had been cleared.
1st April – Two Cardiff women arrested after crashing into 13-year-old pedestrian

Two women from Cardiff were arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a 13-year-old boy was struck by a van and had to be taken to hospital. The accident happened on Friday afternoon on Cardiff Road in Caerphilly, just a few miles north of Cardiff. The road in Caerphilly town centre was closed for six hours as emergency services attended to the scene, and the two women, aged 51 and 42, were also taken to hospital for treatment. A Gwent police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision involving a car, a van and pedestrians on St Martins Road, Caerphilly at around 2.40pm on Friday March 31. Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service. A 13-year-old boy has been taken to hospital for treatment.”
29th March – Busy Cardiff road closed after serious road collision

A pedestrian was hospitalised and traffic was thrown into chaos after a serious collision on North Road this afternoon, one of the busiest roads in Cardiff. Reports of the collision were made shortly before 1pm and the road was closed for a full nine hours before being reopened around 10pm. Buses were re-routed while local residents reported a large number of emergency service vehicles attending to the scene. A police spokesperson reported that one person, a pedestrian, had been taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, while investigations into the collision continued.
22nd March – Road shut for hours as motorists hospitalised

A major road north of Cardiff was shut for several hours on Wednesday as emergency services attended to a serious road collision. The A470 between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon was closed from around 5am, causing major tailbacks, while two motorists involved in the collision were taken to hospital. A Welsh ambulance service spokesperson said: “We were called shortly after 5am on Wednesday, March 22, to reports of a road traffic accident on the A470 at Storey Arms in Brecon. We sent four emergency ambulances to the scene where crews were also supported by a high-acuity response unit paramedic, a duty operations manager, and the emergency medical retrieval and transfer service.”
9th March – Boy hospitalised in grit lorry collision

A 13-year-old pedestrian was hospitalised after a collision with a grit lorry on the Lansbury Park Distributor Road in Caerphilly just north of Cardiff. The 36-year-old driver was charged with driving without due care and attention, while an ambulance spokesperson said: “We were called today shortly before 8.15am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and vehicle on Lansbury Park Distributor Road. We sent one rapid response vehicle and one emergency ambulance to the scene, where we were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. One person was taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for further treatment.” The driver remains in police custody.
6th March – Two hospitalised in Cardiff after Caerphilly accident
A three vehicle smash closed the A468 in Caerphilly in both directions this morning, while two of the motorists were airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The incident occurred just after 11.00am on the section of the A468 between the B4263 St Cenydd Road (Trecenydd roundabout) and the A469 (Cedar Tree roundabout) just north of Cardiff. A police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a road traffic accident on the A468. Officials were present, along with staff from the Welsh Ambulance Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to assist with traffic management. A blue Citroen car, a Ford van and a heavy-duty vehicle were involved in the collision. The drivers of the Ford Transit Van and Citroen were taken to Cardiff University Hospital for treatment.
6th March – Police criticised for delay in finding multiple victims of fatal Cardiff car crash
Police were being criticised by relatives and local residents today after a party of five people were involved in a fatal car crash in Cardiff but were undiscovered for 46 hours. Three women and two men were involved in the car crash on the A48(M) in the St Mellons area of Cardiff on Friday evening, after they had enjoyed a night out in Newport. Despite relatives raising a missing persons alarm, a public search was not announced until 11pm on Sunday. Shortly after midnight on Monday morning the crash site was spotted. Three people in the car were found dead while two of their friends were rushed to hospital in critical condition, where they remain. The car had veered off a slip road and lay undetected surrounded by trees and obscured from view. A police spokesperson said: “Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, including when the collision took place. The five individuals were the subject of enquiries by Gwent police following a missing person report made during the evening of Saturday 4 March. A subsequent missing person report in respect of one of the individuals was made to South Wales police on Sunday 5 March. Referrals have been made by Gwent police and South Wales police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The last confirmed sighting of the five was during the early hours of Saturday morning.”
16th February – M4 partially closed by early morning collision

Two lanes of the busy M4 leading into Cardiff were closed for an hour this morning after two vehicles collided. The incident happened at 6.15am between junctions 35 and 36 on the eastbound carriageway leading into Cardiff. Both the vehicles were moved onto the hard shoulder and the lanes were reopened within an hour, but traffic was reported to be slow-moving for most of the morning.
15th February – M4 crash causes major delays

The westbound carriageway of the M4 heading out of Cardiff was thrown into chaos this morning when a collision occurred causing major tailbacks. Highways agency Traffic Wales advised drivers to avoid the scene of the collision between junctions 29 and 30 and although all lanes were reopened within two hours, there was still slow-moving traffic at the scene.
7th February – Seven parked cars damaged in road traffic collision

Police were called to an unusual incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning, when a car crashed into and damaged seven parked cars in a street in Tonyrefail just outside Cardiff. Investigations are still ongoing and police are appealing for information. Only four parked cars on the street remained undamaged by the incident, and this follows a similar accident in April 2021, which also damaged parked cars. A police spokesperson said: “At 2.30am on February 7, Police were called to a road traffic collision on Collenna Road, Tonyrefail. One vehicle crashed and collided with a number of parked cars. Police are continuing to investigate the collision.”
6th February – Accident causes major traffic disruption on busy M4

Traffic on a key route into Cardiff was disrupted after a one-car accident closed a lane this afternoon. The incident occurred at around 3pm on the M4 just outside Cardiff. One lane was blocked westbound on the M4 just after J30 near Cardiff gate. The lane was reopened an hour later but traffic was still reported to be slow and disrupted for several hours afterwards.
6th February – Two vehicle accident closes Cardiff tunnel

An accident involving a car and a motorbike closed a major route into Cardiff this morning, as emergency services battled to attend to the incident and clear the scene. The accident occurred on the eastbound side of the Butetown tunnel between Stuart Street and the A4234 Queens Gate roundabout, and with the ensuing road closure caused significant tailbacks and buses to be rerouted. The accident was cleared and the road reopened within 90 minutes.
21st December 2022 – Cyclist killed in heavy goods vehicle collision

A 65-year-old cyclist has been killed after a collision with an HGV which closed a Cardiff road for 12 hours yesterday. The collision occurred on the B4267 Leckwith Road at around 4.45pm, and along with a second incident nearby on Ninian Park Road brought the city streets to a standstill for several hours. Police later reported that there had sadly been a fatality in the Leckwith Road incident, with four fire engines attending the scene and the cyclist being taken to the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff. Police are still investigating the accident and are appealing for witnesses.
21st December 2022 – Two road incidents cause overnight gridlock in Cardiff

Two separate road accidents caused the streets of Cardiff to be gridlocked last night, with one road being closed in both directions. The first incident took place between B4267 Leckwith Road and Kitchener Road, while at 4.45pm a second incident closed Ninian Park Road, with road and bus update services reporting “incredibly slow” traffic as a result. Reporting on the Ninian Park Road incident, police said: “The road is currently closed in both directions. It is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.” By 3.00amboth roads had been reopened to ease traffic concerns for rush hour.
14th December 2022 – Heavy traffic delays after four-vehicle smash

A busy link road near the M4 in Cardiff was at a standstill this morning as a four-vehicle collision caused tailbacks for busy commuters. The incident happened on the A4232 near the Leckwith slip road and Junction 32 of the M4 at around 7.00 am, causing chaos for commuters at rush hour. The collision was swiftly cleared up and traffic was moving normally by 10.00am. Police released the following statement: “Police were called shortly before 7.00am following a report of a four vehicle road traffic collision on the outbound carriageway of the A4232. There are no reports of injuries and the vehicles have been removed.”
8th December 2022 – Airport delays as drink drive collision hospitalises driver

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a collision on a busy link road near Cardiff Airport this morning. The one-vehicle crash occurred on the B4265 near Aberthaw and with the road being closed for several hours, causing delays for passengers travelling for flights from Cardiff Airport. A 23-year-old man was taken to University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff with serious injuries as a result of the collision. A police spokesperson said: “A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving and was taken to Bridgend Bridewell Police Station where he was then further arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.” Although the road has now reopened, police say enquiries into the accident are still ongoing.
1st December 2022 – Cardiff road shut for three hours as one person hospitalised

A serious road collision closed the A4232 in Cardiff this morning as a car driver and a cyclist required attention from the emergency services. The collision occurred at the roundabout on Lamby Way at around 6.00am and the route was blocked for three hours while an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the scene. A police spokesperson later commented: “Shortly after 6.10am this morning emergency services were called to a road traffic collision between a car and a cyclist which happened on the roundabout junction of the A4232 and Lamby Way. Partial road closures were in place while the incident was dealt with. There are no reports of serious injuries.”
26th November – Man killed in HGV crash

A fatal collision between an Audi and an HGV has killed one man and hospitalised a woman passenger in the same vehicle. The accident occurred early on Saturday morning and closed a section of the main Valley road at Llanharan for 11 hours. Police are now appealing for witnesses to the accident and have released the following statement: “One man has died and one woman is in hospital in a critical condition. Both were occupants of the Audi. Next of kin have been informed. The community is thanked for its patience while the road remains closed. South Wales Police is appealing for witnesses to the collision or those who have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to make contact.”
24th November – Pedestrian struck by car in petrol station

A female pedestrian was hospitalised after being struck by a vehicle while walking across a petrol station forecourt. The collision occurred in the Riverside area of the city on Wednesday evening and a police statement read: “Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision between a female pedestrian and a car at approximately 6.30pm at Texaco garage on Tudor Street, Cardiff. The pedestrian was taken to University Hospital Wales as a precautionary measure.”
23rd November – Fatal crash closes busy airport road in Cardiff

Police are investigating after a motorcyclist died in a three-vehicle crash on the A4226 in Barry, a busy road on the way to Cardiff airport. The road was closed for most of the day as the accident was investigated. A 21-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene and police are now appealing for witnesses, and in a statement said: We are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision that occurred at around 5:20am this morning (November 23, 2021) on the A4226 between the Rhoose roundabout and the British Airways Maintenance Centre roundabout. A white Vauxhall Astra, a blue Honda motorcycle and a heavy goods vehicle were involved in a collision, as a result of the collision and despite the best efforts of attending emergency services the 21-year-old man who was the rider of the motorcycle was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Vauxhall Astra, a 53-year-old woman, was taken to hospital where she remains receiving treatment. Officers investigating the incident would like to speak to any witnesses to the collision, anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the incident or anyone who witnessed the manner of driving of the Vauxhall Astra or Honda motorcycle prior to the collision.”
21st November – Fife driver killed in Cardiff motorway accident

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 69-year-old driver from Fife in Scotland was killed in a single vehicle accident on the M40 in Cardiff. The accident happened at Sunday lunchtime between junctions 30 and 32 when the car hit the central reservation and then remained stationary in the hard shoulder. A police statement read: “We are appealing for witnesses to a single vehicle road traffic collision which happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 30 and 32 at around 12.15pm on Sunday (November 20) and involved a grey Mercedes. The car collided with the central reservation before coming to a halt on the hard shoulder.”
8th November – Driver airlifted to Cardiff hospital after Swansea smash

A driver was airlifted to University Hospital Wales in Cardiff with “life-changing” injuries after an accident on Townhill Road in Swansea on Monday morning, which involved only one vehicle. The car overturned as a result of the accident and the ambulance service was called out at 4.30am. The road was closed for several hours while the incident was investigated. A spokeswoman for the ambulance service commented: “We sent one rapid response vehicle, two emergency ambulances and two duty operations managers to the scene, where we were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. One person was taken to University Hospital of Wales Cardiff for further treatment.”
26th October – Stationary vehicle accident sees two people hospitalised

A driver experiencing a “medical episode” at the wheel hit a stationary vehicle on a Cardiff street on Tuesday evening leading to two people being admitted to hospital. The accident occurred near the Hollybush pub at Coryton where a stationary vehicle was waiting at a junction when it was struck by the second vehicle. Ambulance and fire crews attended the scene and one of the two passengers in the stationary vehicle was taken to University Hospital Wales along with the driver of the other vehicle. A police spokesperson said: “South Wales Police attended the scene of a road traffic collision at around 6.30pm last night involving two vehicles. It appears the driver of a car had a medical episode and collided with a stationary vehicle waiting at the junction of Pantmawr Road and Pendwyallt Road.”
24th October – Monday morning traffic chaos as M4 collision slows commuters

The Monday morning commute was thrown into chaos on the M4 between Cardiff and Newport when a three-vehicle collision closed lanes and caused heavy congestion. Cameras reported very heavy traffic between junctions 29 and 30 after ambulance services were called to an incident at 5.43am. Although all three lanes were fully reopened by 7.49am, there were reports of long tailbacks as the traffic pressure eased. No ambulance crews were required to attend the accident.
22nd October – Life-changing injuries suffered after multi-vehicle accident
An accident involving three vehicles close to Cardiff prison resulted in several people attending hospital for minor injuries, but one driver was described as receiving “life-changing injuries”. The accident occurred south of the A4234 on the busy Central link road between the bay and the city centre. The road was closed for several hours near to Cardiff’s Queen Street railway station and a South Wales police statement appealed for witnesses to the accident to come forward.
16th October – Duo airlifted to hospital after high-speed crash

Two drivers were taken to hospital after emergency services attended a crash in the village of Treherbert, just outside Cardiff, on Sunday afternoon. The drivers were taken to different hospitals – University Hospital Wales and Royal Glamorgan Hospital – after emergency services attended the scene, including an air ambulance. A police spokesperson commented: “Shortly after 1.30pm on Sunday officers were called following reports of a road traffic collision in Bute Street, Treherbert. The collision involved two vehicles. One person has been taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing. The road is currently blocked and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.”
10th October – Three vehicle crash closes busy A48
A collision involving two HGVs and a third vehicle hospitalised three people and closed a stretch of the A48 just outside Cardiff on Monday morning. The section of road just outside Bonvilston was closed for several hours in order to recover the vehicles, while the drivers were taken to hospital for treatment on minor injuries. A police spokesperson said: “We were called just before 11.00am to a report of the road traffic collision on the A48 west of Bonvilston involving two lorries and a car. Three people have suffered minor injuries and will attend the University Hospital of Wales. The road is closed while vehicles are recovered.”
23rd September – Flames as dramatic crash shuts the M4 near Cardiff

Two cars both burst into flames in a dramatic crash on the M4 with an elderly couple heroically pulled from the wreckage seconds before it set alight. A near-certain tragedy was avoided on Tuesday evening after two cars driving at high speed between junctions 29 and 30 of the M4 collided. People nearby attended quickly to the scene and pulled two pensioners from one of the cars.
A witness statement read:
“The actual accident itself happened around 8pm. Ten minutes before the tunnels where it says 50mph, a small black car came swerving in the fast lane and going 70 in a 50. I’ve never seen anyone speed as fast as that in the area. My first initial thought was that an accident was going to happen. I was considering calling the police at this point but I was driving and decided I’d call them when I was home.”
An accident then occurred shortly after, just before the A4232 exit in which one of the two cars flipped and rolled over. Passers-by managed to free an elderly couple from one car before it burst into flames, but both occupants had already suffered minor injuries.
A police statement later read:
“Shortly after 8pm on Tuesday 20 September, emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the M4 westbound, between J30 and J29. The collision involved two vehicles and both vehicles caught on fire. The motorway was closed in both directions between J30 and J29. Police, fire and ambulance service were in attendance. There are no reports of any serious injuries. The vehicles were removed from the scene by 10.30pm and the motorway was reopened. Motorists are thanked for their patience while the incident was being dealt with.”
12th September – Fatal crash kills motorcyclist

Tragedy struck on Monday evening as police reported a motorcyclist crashing into a fence on Archer Road in Ely, Cardiff. The bike left the road and collided with the fence and when emergency services attended the accident, they reported that the rider had died at the scene.
A police statement read:
“South Wales Police can confirm the death of a motorcyclist following a road traffic collision in Ely, Cardiff, last night. Emergency services were called to a report of a motorcycle colliding with a fence near to Archer Road at approximately 9pm. The man’s next of kin and HM Coroner have been informed. Enquiries are on-going.”
9th September – Road closure causes Friday afternoon chaos

Cardiff’s road network was thrown into chaos on Friday afternoon after the A4232 at Culverhouse Cross was closed following an accident. Police attended the scene and the road was closed for three hours in both directions, but was reopened in the early evening. The incident occurred at 14.20pm but by 17.42 police were reporting that traffic flow in the area had returned to normal.
2nd September – Multi-vehicle crash disrupts the weekend dash

Commuters hoping to get a quick headstart on the weekend getaway were scuppered by a multi-vehicle crash on the M4 on Friday afternoon, which caused heavy congestion. The collision happened between junctions 33 and 34 of the M4 just outside Cardiff, and emergency services were very quickly at the scene. Although the collision occurred on the hard shoulder, one lane of the motorway was blocked and congestion at a peak time of travel very quickly built-up.
1st September – Fully-laden vehicle bursts into flames after tree collision

A vehicle with six occupants crashed into a tree after exiting the dual carriageway on the A4232 in Cardiff on Thursday evening, and the burst into flames. All six people in the vehicle were hospitalised following the accident, which closed the busy road for four hours to allow police to carry out investigations. Police are now appealing for witnesses to the accident, which didn’t involve any other vehicles. A statement read: “We are investigating a road traffic collision which happened on the A4232 between Culverhouse Cross and Leckwith at around 11.35pm on Thursday, September 1. The single vehicle collision involved a grey Fiat Punto which left the carriageway, collided with trees and burst into flames. Six occupants from the vehicle were taken to the University Hospital of Wales where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.” Three of the occupants were later released from hospital, but three remain in care, one of which has life-threatening injuries.
26th August – Crash delays Bank holiday getaway

Motorists hoping for a quick Bank Holiday getaway on the roads were scuppered by a crash on the M4 which caused heavy disruption. 11th July – Young cyclist hospitalised in Cardiff after city centre accident
A 16-year-old cyclist was dramatically airlifted to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff after he was injured in a collision with a car on Fabian Way in Swansea on Saturday. Two people – a 38-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman – were questioned in connection to the incident, which closed the busy dual carriageway for six hours on Saturday afternoon. The working week started with more motorway hold-ups when a crash on the M4 near Cardiff closed two lanes of the popular commuter route at 7.20am on Monday. Police are appealing for information after two people were hospitalised after the van they were travelling in crashed into a tree. A 19-year-old and a 16-year-old were travelling in a Peugeot Partner van on New Road in Rumney, Cardiff in the early hours of Thursday morning when they collided with the tree with no other vehicles involved, they are now both seriously ill in hospital. The Black Mountain road in Brynamman was closed for over three hours after a motorcyclist collided with a fence and had to be airlifted to University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff. A busy commuter road in Cardiff was closed on Wednesday morning, after a two-vehicle collision resulted in both cars being overturned, but miraculously no one was seriously injured. A 63-year-old woman was fatally struck by a bus on Saturday afternoon in Cardiff city centre, and despite the efforts of members of the public, the woman died at the scene. 26th May 2022 – Gardener banned after alcohol-fuelled crash
A self-employed gardener was over the drink-driving limit when he shunted a car and caused a three-car pile-up while taking a break from work in the Llandaff area of Cardiff. The prosecutor at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court said: “He realised far too late what was ahead of him and shunted one car in the back, which then hit another. Police attended and suspected he was under the influence of alcohol.” The 53-year-old man had twice taken a break from work to drive to a shop to buy bottles of wine, which he had consumed while working and later caused the accident. He received a 23-month driving ban, 10 days of rehabilitation activity, 80 hours of unpaid work, £85 in prosecution costs, and a £95 victim services surcharge.

3rd May 2022 – Friend pleads for leniency after drink and drugs-induced accident
A 21-year-old female caused a serious road traffic accident which left one of two friends in a coma, after driving while 12 times over the legal limit with drink and drugs in her bloodstream. The accident in August 2021 left one friend in a coma in the University of Wales hospital in Cardiff after they attended a party together. Despite being left with life-changing injuries, the victim wanted to spare his friend from jail, with a statement in court saying: “I do not blame her for the collision. It was an accident, it was not intentional. I want her to know I do not want her to go to prison.” However, the 21-year-old woman was jailed for a total of 22 months and was told she would serve half of that in custody before being eligible for release on licence. She was also disqualified from driving for four years and 11 months.

A teenage motorcyclist and a pensioner cyclist were both hospitalised after a collision which closed a busy commuter route out of Cardiff for seven hours. 11th March – Deputy Minister hails safer streets campaign in Cardiff North
Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Lee Waters, was on hand to launch a pilot scheme in Whitchurch in Cardiff aimed at testing the process to reduce the national default speed limit on residential streets and busy pedestrian roads from 30mph to 20mph. The scheme has the objective of reducing road traffic accidents and providing safer streets, particularly around schools, and is one of eight such schemes being rolled out across Wales. 21st February – 4-year-old girl dies in fatal M4 road smash
A four-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother have both died in a tragic road accident on the M4 near Cardiff on Saturday 5th February. Four people were rushed to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in total, including the children’s mother, who was also seriously injured in the crash. 17th February – Drug driving man kills girlfriend in terrifying Cardiff plunge
A 35-year-old male drove his 28-year-old girlfriend off a motorway bridge while high on cocaine in a shocking accident caught on roadside CCTV. On the A470 in Cardiff in November 2020, the man drove through a red light at 64mph, across two lanes of traffic and through a roadside barrier before the car disappeared into woodland. The man escaped the wreckage but his girlfriend died at the scene. He was jailed for seven years and banned from driving for eight years at Cardiff Crown Court.

A 20-year-old woman from St Mellons has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after ploughing her car into two parked cars on Newport Road in Roath at 10.30pm on Tuesday 25th January. The family of an 18-year-old have spoken of their grief after their daughter was named as the victim in a fatal road crash on 23rd January just outside Swansea on the A4067. All lanes were closed on the M4 between junctions 32 and 33 after a road traffic collision caused oil to be spilled on the carriageway of Cardiff’s busiest motorway. Traffic was diverted after the incident at 6.15pm on Friday evening, while recovery vehicles and gritters attempted to clean up the scene. Fire & Rescue services were in attendance to help with the situation and roads were eventually re-opened within 90 minutes, while the recovery operation continued.

14th January – Newport city centre accident causes traffic chaos in Cardiff area
A two-vehicle collision in Newport City Centre caused traffic to build-up on all roads leading into and out of Newport on Friday afternoon. Police have confirmed a two-vehicle incident on John Frost Square near Friars Walk shopping centre just after 2pm. A spokesperson said the incident happened at 2.05pm and involved a Silver VW Golf and a Renault van. Ambulance services attended and all roads were blocked, with bus services temporarily suspended. The roads were fully re-opened and traffic on the busy route to and from Cardiff, began to ease before rush hour.

11th January – Crash closes busiest motorway stretch in the Cardiff area
A multiple-vehicle road traffic collision temporarily closed the M4 near Cardiff late on Monday evening causing widespread short-term diversions. The accident happened at 10.45pm on Monday evening (January 10) between junction 37 for Pyle/Porthcawl and junction 38 for Margam. The late night collision was cleared by the morning but still caused major traffic build-ups in the area, but thankfully this was cleared and the road re-opened by the time the early morning rush hour started.
