On this coming Sunday, the 6th of October, at around 10.00 am, seven of us from the Mooneerams Solicitors team will be on our marks and set to go in the 21st Principality Cardiff Half Marathon (CHM). In those minutes before the race, whilst waiting in a crowd of more than 27,500 fellow runners of all ages and sizes, the nerves kick in – nerves and the realisation that you’ve got 13.1 miles to negotiate over the next couple of hours.
Then you’re off. See you at the finish!
When seven of us from Mooneerams put our hands up to take part in the Cardiff Half to raise funds on behalf of our Charity of the Year, Bronwen’s W;sh, it became the highest number of runners Mooneerams has entered as a team in the Cardiff Half before. This weekend sees the culmination of plenty of hard work over the past few months as we’ve tried to fit a run into our busy working and family days.
Our youngest runners are in their early/mid-twenties, some in their 30s and one a little older. Ok, the oldie is me, and by a dramatic twist of fate, I turn 65 on the day of the race!
We are running a combined total of over 91 miles between us to raise much-needed funds for Bronwen’s W;sh. The charity was set up in 2020 in memory of Bronwen Morgan, a 26-year-old Mental Health Nursing student who passed away by suicide in that same year.
In addition to using its voice to campaign for changes in the mental health system, the charity raises funds to build Welfare Pods, or Dens, for local communities. The Pods provide a quiet haven for children to spend time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life or meet one-to-one with a friend to talk over anything troubling them with someone they trust.
Bronwen’s W;sh is not a large charity. So, every penny it receives as a donation really counts. I’m sure that if any of us start to flag Sunday, for that bit of extra inspiration, we’ll need only to remind ourselves why we are running the race!
